Thanks for this - I was one that has really been feeling like the end of the Space Shuttle might be a sign of the decline of the United States as a whole. Growing up in the '80s I remember the first Shuttle missions and a time before the Space Shuttle. For so long it has been a symbol of the United States, so I would be sad to see it go even if there were a viable replacement ready to go right now. I think one of the things I loved about the Space Shuttle, and what was so inspiring about it, especially as a kid, was just how cool it looked - a winged space vehicle that just looked like it was ready to fly off into the solar system and beyond. We all know that it couldn't, but in my young imagination it could! By comparison a capsule type craft just seems well, boring, even if it makes the most sense.
I know that an interest in space exploration was a major factor in my motivation for learning about math and science. I know this is true for many, many others too. Luckily, the young generations (and the somewhat older ones like me) have these private companies to watch who are doing things that promise to be just as inspiring or even more exciting and inspiring than the Space Shuttle. NASA's new focus on deep space exploration is the next exciting step that needs to be taken as well. They have blazed the trail for the private industry, so it just makes sense to re-focus NASA to what is the far end of the cutting edge of space exploration. With NASA continuing on and the private industry being involved now, there can be even more opportunities for young people to dream of working in the space industry and even being astronauts.

I look forward to learning a great deal about generating gravity where it doesn't exist. We are very fortunate to have Joe Carroll living in San Diego. See you there.

My mother and brother stood that day in the pouring rain, just to get a glance at the first man in space. I was still more than a year away from my own "landing"! My mum still talks of that day. Yuri Gagarin was a charming man, who met a sad demise. However, I'm glad that my fellow Mancunians gave him such a wonderful reception,

I am looking forward to this event but I would recommend some edits to your history above. First you say spaceflight began "45" years ago when it should be 50! Also in the history of spaceflight to mention the space shuttle program starting 20 years later as one of the other major milestones later struck me as leaving something pretty major out. Here's a hint of what I mean. It involved some guy named Neil.
