How much can a person give up? How much weirdness can they take? What happens to you when you can’t walk for a year? What happens if you vomit in your helmet during a space walk? Is it possible for the human body to survive bailout at 4,000 miles per hour? To answer these questions, space agencies set up all manner of quizzical and startling bizarre space simulations — making it possible to preview space without ever leaving Earth. From the space capsule (cadaver filling in for astronaut), “Packing for Mars” takes us on a surreally entertaining trip into the science of life in space and space on Earth.

The panel featured newspace companies, represented by John Hunter, Mark Street, and Molly McCormick, plus Dave Rankin from the Mars Society. Moderator Jeff Berkwits kept things lively with his questions, and we were also able to answer a few from the crowd as well.

At one point, during a discussion of FAA safety rules for private spacecraft and informed consent, I asked the crowd, “Who here would go anyway?” Nearly everyone in the room raised their hands.

Outside of Earth herself, Mars is the most Earth-like planet in our solar system. But what does that really mean? What are the current conditions on the red planet? Is there air, water and other necessities for life? Could human beings eventually colonize there and make a second home for human civilization? We’ll take a multimedia look at what our robotic explorers are telling us about what the planet Mars is really like.

MARS MOVIE NIGHT — THE ASTRONAUT (1972)

In the not too distant future the first American astronaut prepares to set foot on the planet Mars. The world is watching this event live on television. Everything is a success, or so the world thinks, and he is treated as a hero upon his return. Later, it is discovered that the mission was a failure and as the astronaut on Mars died of an undetermined condition. Mission controllers on Earth fed a false image into the “live” broadcast so as not to panic the public. The “astronaut” who returned to Earth is actually a double who had undergone surgery so as to look like the real astronaut. Only the wife of the astronaut begins to suspect the man who returned, although looking identical to her husband, is somehow different. Unfortunately for those who created the hoax, the Russians announce that due to the American success they have launched their own mission which is now on its way to Mars.
