Grand Opening – Space Travelers Emporium

Sat, Jul 17, 2010

5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Location:
Space Travelers Emporium (map)
1947 30th St. San Diego, CA 92102

The San Diego Space Society is proud to announce the Grand Opening of the Space Travelers Emporium. The event coincides with the South Park Walkabout and the screening of the movie Moon Beat (seating is limited, so be sure to RSVP for the movie to confirm yours).

After a month and a half of hard work by many SD Space members, the Space Travelers Emporium will open for business. The Emporium is a storefront that provides both financial support for SD Space and outreach to the community. It’s also designed to be a classroom, project lab, and meeting place for local space enthusiasts.

The storefront will feature a blend of in-stock products (t-shirts, posters, patches), special order items (books, model rockets, electronics, actual space suits), and travel-agency-style ticketing (Zero-G flights, suborbital space flights, astronaut training).

Members and the public are invited to attend. For more information, email info@sdspace.org.

“Moon Beat” re-examines the epic 1969 flight of Apollo XI, on it’s 40th anniversary, with a behind-the-scenes look from top NASA officials and many leading journalists who covered the first moon landing and the U.S. Space program. The Summer of ’69 was an historic time, a turbulent time, and a time before cell phones, the Internet or 24-hour cable news. It was a time when newspapers and magazines flourished – alongside just three major U.S television networks. Around the world, the BBC covered the historic flight for an even larger European audience, and reporters from all corners of the globe were focused on just one story – the flight of Apollo XI and mankind’s Journey to the Moon.

The award-winning film also features interviews with senior NASA officials including Hugh W. Harris, Former Director of NASA Public Affairs and Jack King (Voice of Apollo) who is best remembered for his exhilarating Apollo launch countdowns by millions of Apollo enthusiasts around the world.

After the movie, director/producer Kevin Stirling will provide insight into the making of the film and answer questions.

Admission is FREE and popcorn is provided.

Tom Swift Centennial

July 16, 2010 to July 18, 2010

Location:
Sheraton Mission Valley (details)
San Diego, CA

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Tom Swift series of books. To celebrate, the 100th anniversary Tom Swift Convention will be held in San Diego.

The Tom Swift series, and later Tom Swift Jr. and other similar series, introduced readers to marvelous adventures in the near and far future. Sometimes, as in the first and fourth series, the adventures seemed like something which could occur in the “today” when the books were published. Other series were set in the near or far future.

The goal of this convention is to draw attention to these influential books and give fans, scholars, and people who were influenced by them a chance to gather together and celebrate the anniversary.

SD Space director Jeff Berkwits will give a presentation at the convention.
