OASIS Presents “Not Your Parents’ Lunar Lander”

Sat, Jan 17, 2009

3:00 pm to 5:00 pm

Location:
El Dorado Public Library (map)
2900 Studebaker Rd, Long Beach, CA

OASIS invites you to a lecture by David E. Barnhart, Assoc. Director, Space Engineering Research Center
“Not Your Parents Lunar Lander; USC’s Project Leapfrog”

Admission Free
This event is not library-sponsored

A Return to the Moon requires a new generation of rocket engineers. Decades removed from the Apollo program that trained an earlier generation, they need to innovate on a deadline, using the latest technology to construct low-cost prototypes for testing and evaluation. Where can future rocket engineers learn these skills? Look to USC.

David A. Barnhart will explain how Project LEAPFROG is providing USC students the opportunity to design, build, and test a low cost, working model of a lunar lander. The hovering platform will demonstrate descent and landing profiles similar to those performed on the Moon. Placed in a tightly integrated team environment, these future engineers gain valuable aerospace experience — the sort their parents may have gotten working on Apollo.

Mr. Barnhart is manager of Project LEAPFROG. He has a Master of Science degree in Aerospace and Ocean Engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Boston University.

JPL Tweetup

Wed, Jan 21, 2009

5:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Location:
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Pasadena, CA

(Unfortunately the signup list for this event is already closed, but SD Space members will attend and bring back stories, photos, and maybe video.)

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will host a Tweetup on Wed., Jan. 21 at JPL in Pasadena, Calif., from 5 to 7:30 p.m. PST.

What’s a Tweetup? A Tweetup is an informal “meet up” of people on Twitter. This Tweetup is an opportunity to meet and speak with the JPL staff, scientists, and engineers behind the tweets of @CassiniSaturn, @MarsPhoenix, @MarsRovers, @MarsScienceLab, @EarthVitalSigns, @PlanetQuest and more. Plus, we’ll meet and mingle with other space-exploration-minded tweeps.

If you’re interested in diving into Twitter, be sure to follow @sdspace and take a look at the amazing people we’re following as well.

As this happens a meteorite falls from the sky containing Ghidorah, the monster responsible for her planet’s destruction. At the same time, Godzilla and Rodan emerge from hibernation and not only attack Japan, but each other as well. Mothra, along with its twin priestesses, attempt to convince Godzilla and Rodan to stop their fighting each other and to team up to fight the new monster. At the same time, the princess is being hunted by a group of assassins who want to kill her so that her enemies can take over her homeland.

Showtime is at 7:00pm at Studio 106 — please RSVP as seating is limited. Popcorn is provided — you can bring drinks or snacks to share.

This month we’ll finish up work on the display table for Spacefest and start design work for SD Science Festival Expo.

Space is limited, so please RSVP to events@sdspace.org if you’re interested.
