NASA Summer of Innovation Workshop

Sat, Oct 1, 2011

San Diego Space Society and Project Astro have combined forces to offer an educational, space-related, hands-on workshop for area teachers intended to enhance S.T.E.M. education curriculum. There are four areas of focus: Life Science, Physical Science, Earth & Space Science and Engineering. This workshop is made possible by a NASA Summer of Innovation grant.

The NASA Office of Education is pleased to announce the selected sites for the second and final phase of applications for the Summer of Innovation Mini-Grant opportunity in partnership with the National Space Grant Foundation for 2011. The mini-grant aspect of the SoI enables local organizations to infuse NASA-themed science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, content and activities to middle school students through existing summer and/or afterschool programs and anticipates engaging over 8,000 students in this fiscal year!

The workshop will be conducted at the RHFleet Science Center for registered participants on October 1st.

Fall Walkabout – ArtOberwest

Sat, Oct 1, 2011

6:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Location:
Space Travelers Emporium (map)
1947 30th St. San Diego, CA 92102

The Space Travelers Emporium will again open it’s doors for the fall South Park Walkabout.

The theme for this Walkabout is Art, so we will have various Space Art on display – some from local artists, some concept art from the early years of space travel as well as our favorite retro-space travel artwork. And we’ve included Space Art Activities for everyone to participate in.

Another Emporium special feature for this Walkabout is a video presentation and slideshow by the Emporium interns about the buildup of commercial space activities, including the near term launch and docking of the SpaceX Dragon capsule to the International Space Station – a first in history!

And we’ll again bring out the ever popular Mars suit and our Mars Astronaut will be walking around greeting people and will be available for photos.  You’ll have Mars rover driving and special Emporium sales all night.

We are also kicking off our 2012 San Diego Space Society Membership Drive.  Join the Society starting then and as a bonus, the rest of 2011 is included for free – with all of the benefits!

Members and the public are invited to stop by for a visit. For more information, email info@sdspace.org.
