Better Paths to a New Frontier

Derek Nye once again goes into depth to cover a space topic of current interest, using a clear style accessible to everyone. This time he takes on nothing less than the future of space exploration itself in his article Better Paths to a New Frontier:

Space is limitless in the number of destinations we can pursue. From moons, and planets, to solar systems, and galaxies, we are only at the beginning of what space can offer us. Although we can agree that certain destinations are much more favorable than others, we cannot always agree on the path we will take to get to these destinations, and in what order we wish to pursue them. …

In this post, I will introduce (or re-introduce in some cases) you to some of the better plans we should pursue on our path towards greater space exploration. I will also address the current plan being developed regarding the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle and Space Launch System in some detail. …

Book Signing with Apollo 15 Astronaut Al Worden

Fri, Aug 26, 2011

1:00 pm to 4:00 pm

San Diego Air & Space Museum, Balboa Park
2001 Pan American Plz, San Diego, CA 92101

On Friday, August 26, the San Diego Air & Space Museum is offering a special opportunity to meet Al Worden, command module pilot for the Apollo 15 mission to the moon in 1971. Apollo 15 is widely regarded as the greatest exploration mission that humans have ever attempted. Worden will give a talk relating his fascinating moon-travel experiences, and sign copies of his new book “Falling To Earth: An Apollo 15 Astronaut’s Journey to the Moon” – coauthored by the museums very own Francis French.

Worden spent six days orbiting the moon, including three days completely alone, the most isolated human in existence. During the return from the moon to earth he also conducted the first spacewalk in deep space, becoming the first human ever to see both the entire earth and moon simply by turning his head. The Apollo 15 flight capped an already-impressive career as an astronaut, including important work on the pioneering Apollo 9 and Apollo 12 missions, as well as the perilous flight of Apollo 13.

Time: 1pm: 1st book signing; 2pm: talk; 3pm: 2nd book signing

Cost: Free with Museum General Admission

Note: Colonel Worden will only autograph books purchased at the Museum on the day of the event. Please no memorabilia and outside items.

Win a Trip to Space!

Can’t afford a trip to space but always wanted to go? Well, this may be just the ticket for you!

Space Needle is partnering with Space Adventures to sponsor a sweepstakes where you will have the opportunity to be one of the first people to soar into suborbital space to see the curvature of the earth and the blackness of Space.

Why is the Space Needle sending someone to space?
Seattle’s iconic Space Needle will be sending someone from the general public into space through our Space Race 2012 program. This mission is in celebration of the Space Needle’s 50th Anniversary – built in 1962 for the World’s Fair, its creation marked the beginning of the original space race that put man on the moon. That chapter has drawn to a close – the era of government-run space travel ended with the final shuttle mission. Now an exciting new chapter is being written, one driven by entrepreneurism that is creating democratized space travel that will ultimately be available to all mankind.

The Space Race 2012 program will run over the next 18 months with a sweepstakes for great prizes, followed by a competition that will determine the winner of the trip to space.
