The Columbia Memorial Space Center is a unique space science learning center located in Downey, California. Focusing on engineering, technology and science, it’s goal is to teach young people about space exploration and aviation with fun, hands-on experiences.

The Space Center features an interactive Robotics Lab, a state-of-the-art Magic Planet exhibit, a two-story Rocket Launcher, and L.A.’s only Challenger Learning Center for simulated space missions. You can even land the Space Shuttle, explore the Earth from Space, plan a trip to Mars and make your own solar system at one of our computers.

SD Space Movie Night

Sun, Jun 27, 2010

5:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Location:
Studio 106
2323 Broadway, San Diego CA 92102

SDSpace presents a double feature with two Apollo films “Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon” (2007) 40 minutes and “In the Shadow of the Moon” (2008) 110 minute.

“Magnificent Desolation” Only 12 have walked on the moon. You’re next! Presented and narrated by Tom Hanks, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon is an IMAX documentary film that transports the viewer to lunar surface, where they can walk alongside the 12 extraordinary astronauts who have been there, experiencing what they saw, heard, and felt.

In the Shadow of the Moon is an intimate epic, which vividly communicates the daring and the danger, the pride and the passion, of this extraordinary era in American history. Between 1968 and 1972, the world watched in awe each time an American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon. Only 12 American men walked upon its surface and they remain the only human beings to have stood on another world. Now for the first, and very possibly the last, time, IN THE SHADOW OF THE MOON combines archival material from the original NASA film footage, much of it never before seen, with interviews with the surviving astronauts, including Jim Lovell (Apollo 8 and 13), Dave Scott (Apollo 9 and 15), John Young (Apollo 10 and 16), Gene Cernan (Apollo 10 and 17), Mike Collins (Apollo 11), Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11), Alan Bean (Apollo 12), Edgar Mitchell (Apollo 14), Charlie Duke (Apollo 16) and Harrison Schmitt (Apollo 17). The astronauts emerge as eloquent, witty, emotional and very human.

Admission is FREE, and popcorn is provided (you can bring snacks or drinks to share).

Please RSVP, as seating is limited.

June Meeting: Spacesuits 101 with Molly McCormick

Sun, Jun 13, 2010

2:30 pm to 4:30 pm

Location:
Serra Mesa Branch Library (map)
9005 Aero Dr, San Diego, CA

Join us for the June general meeting of the San Diego Space Society. This month’s topic is Spacesuits 101: an introduction to the physical environment of space, what happens to human biology in that environment, and how spacesuits help to protect from that environment. The talk will focus on theory and future design more than past design, including mechanical counterpressure suits and spacedive suits.

Molly McCormick began her newspace career while still a student when she joined Orbital Outfitters as a market/technology researcher. She went on to become the biomechanical engineer on the Orbital Outfitters team that successfully developed a soft spacesuit shoulder with greater mobility and comfort than preexisting designs for a NASA CRAVE contract. She continues to contract her services to Orbital Outfitters as both an engineer and as an author of proposals and technical literature. Ms. McCormick is a PADI certified open water diver and has conducted weightless experiments aboard NASA’s C-9 microgravity aircraft.

(Content warning: this talk will discuss the effects of vacuum or near-vacuum on humans, which might be scary for younger children. Please consider your child’s sensitivity before attending this presentation, and contact info@sdspace.org if you have any questions.)
