A (Detailed) Peek Inside SpaceX

You won’t be surprised to hear that we’re fans of Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX). They’re poised to become the backbone of the next stage of human space exploration, and so far they’re doing it well.

Last week a few of us had the rare opportunity to visit the SpaceX “factory floor” in Hawthorne, CA after attending the tweetup at X PRIZE headquarters. (I know. It was an amazing night all around.) We can’t show you photos from that night, but SpaceX has kindly posted a detailed, fascinating update on Falcon 9 launch progress so we don’t have to. Click through for a taste of the amazing work they’re doing, with lots of great photos.

We wish them good luck on the upcoming Falcon 9 launch. Hot jets! Ad astra!

“ORPHANS OF APOLLO”

Fri, May 28, 2010

6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location:
Historic Warner Grand Theater
478 West 6th Street, San Pedro CA 90731
Orphans of Apollo
“Orphans of Apollo” chronicles the dramatic adventure of the boldest business plan the Earth has ever seen. At the center of the film is ‘MirCorp’. The very first entrepreneurial company to have a sole focus on the privatization of space with a fantastic vision of transforming the Russian space station into an outpost for what was intended to be the first phase of a trillion dollar business. The project was to include mining of asteroids, gravity free laboratories, a space ‘hotel’, and a research facility. MirCorp was the ultimate start-up company, and unlike anything the universe had ever seen.

Followed by a Directors Question & Answer with Keynote Speaker Astronaut & Test Pilot Brian Binnie

One of the first commercial astronauts in the history of the world. Brian made the historic flight of SpaceShipOne to win the X-prize. Test Pilot at Scaled Composites, LLC; Commander, USN, Ret.; Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering; Master of Science in fluid mechanics and thermodynamics from Brown University; Master of Science in aeronautical engineering from Princeton University; graduate of the U.S. Navy’s Test Pilot School (class 93 – June 1987 – May 1988) at Patuxent River.

2010 Space Elevator Conference

August 13, 2010 to August 15, 2010

Location:
Microsoft Conference Center
Redmond, WA

Registration is still available for the 2010 Space Elevator Conference:

The Space Elevator is a radical new way to access space less expensively than possible with chemical rocket technology. The technology offers solutions to many of the problems facing communities today, including but not limited to the need for clean, renewable energy.  The Space Elevator uses a carbon nanotube ribbon that stretches from the surface of the earth to a counterweight in space. Climbers ascend the ribbon lifting cargo and passengers to earth orbits and launching spacecraft to distant planets.

The conference, focusing on all aspects of Space Elevator development, will engage an international audience of scientists, engineers, educators, managers, entrepreneurs, enthusiasts, and students. This conference will feature topical discussions in all of the Four Pillars of Space Elevator Development: Science/Technical, Political/Social, Legal, and Economic. In addition, we anticipate technical and speculative presentations on the topics mentioned below. We invite you to present a paper on a topic of your interest. The evening of August 12th a public presentation on the Space Elevator will be held at the Microsoft Conference Center.

OASIS: A CLOSE LOOK AT MARS

Mon, Jul 19, 2010

10:15 am to 11:45 am

A CLOSE LOOK AT MARS

Outside of Earth herself, Mars is the most Earth-like planet in our solar system. But what does that really mean? What are the current conditions on the red planet? Is there air, water and other necessities for life? Could human beings eventually colonize there and make a second home for human civilization? We’ll take a multimedia look at what our robotic explorers are telling us about what the planet Mars is really like.
