SDSpace is proud to present a special screening of the movie “Moon Beat.”

“Moon Beat” re-examines the epic 1969 flight of Apollo XI, on it’s 40th anniversary, with a behind-the-scenes look from top NASA officials and many leading journalists who covered the first moon landing and the U.S. Space program. The Summer of ’69 was an historic time, a turbulent time, and a time before cell phones, the Internet or 24-hour cable news. It was a time when newspapers and magazines flourished – alongside just three major U.S television networks. Around the world, the BBC covered the historic flight for an even larger European audience, and reporters from all corners of the globe were focused on just one story – the flight of Apollo XI and mankind’s Journey to the Moon.

The award-winning film also features interviews with senior NASA officials including Hugh W. Harris, Former Director of NASA Public Affairs and Jack King (Voice of Apollo) who is best remembered for his exhilarating Apollo launch countdowns by millions of Apollo enthusiasts around the world.
After the movie, director/producer Kevin Stirling will provide insight into the making of the film and answer questions.

Our very own Chris Radcliff, on behalf of the San Diego Space Society, was interviewed this morning on KUSI. The brief discussion involved NASA and the end of the Space Shuttle program. This coincided with the final launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, scheduled for late this morning. Great job Chris!
And thanks to the San Diego Air and Space Museum for their support and for loaning us the shuttle model.

The inaugural SDSpace Movie Night is proud to screen “Orphans of Apollo”.
“Orphans of Apollo” chronicles the dramatic adventure of the boldest business plan the Earth has ever seen. At the center of the film is ‘MirCorp’. The very first entrepreneurial company to have a sole focus on the privatization of space with a fantastic vision of transforming the Russian space station into an outpost for what was intended to be the first phase of a trillion dollar business. The project was to include mining of asteroids, gravity free laboratories, a space ‘hotel’, and a research facility. MirCorp was the ultimate start-up company, and unlike anything the universe had ever seen.
For those of you who cannot make the May 28th screening, plan to attend this one.
Admission is FREE, and popcorn is provided (you can bring snacks or drinks to share).
Please RSVP, as seating is limited.

Join us for the June general meeting of the San Diego Space Society. This month’s topic is Spacesuits 101: an introduction to the physical environment of space, what happens to human biology in that environment, and how spacesuits help to protect from that environment. The talk will focus on theory and future design more than past design, including mechanical counterpressure suits and spacedive suits.
Molly McCormick began her newspace career while still a student when she joined Orbital Outfitters as a market/technology researcher. She went on to become the biomechanical engineer on the Orbital Outfitters team that successfully developed a soft spacesuit shoulder with greater mobility and comfort than preexisting designs for a NASA CRAVE contract. She continues to contract her services to Orbital Outfitters as both an engineer and as an author of proposals and technical literature. Ms. McCormick is a PADI certified open water diver and has conducted weightless experiments aboard NASA’s C-9 microgravity aircraft.
(Content warning: this talk will discuss the effects of vacuum or near-vacuum on humans, which might be scary for younger children. Please consider your child’s sensitivity before attending this presentation, and contact info@sdspace.org if you have any questions.)
