This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Tom Swift series of books. To celebrate, the 100th anniversary Tom Swift Convention will be held in San Diego.
The Tom Swift series, and later Tom Swift Jr. and other similar series, introduced readers to marvelous adventures in the near and far future. Sometimes, as in the first and fourth series, the adventures seemed like something which could occur in the “today” when the books were published. Other series were set in the near or far future.
The goal of this convention is to draw attention to these influential books and give fans, scholars, and people who were influenced by them a chance to gather together and celebrate the anniversary.
SD Space director Jeff Berkwits will give a presentation at the convention.

MoonBots is a Google Lunar X PRIZE LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Challenge. The new contest, announced recently, will challenge small teams comprised of children and adults to design, program, and construct robots that perform simulated lunar missions similar to those required to win the $30 million Google Lunar X PRIZE, a private race to the Moon designed to enable commercial exploration of space while engaging the global public.
SDSpace and it’s Space Activities Lab are putting together a team to support one (or more) local MoonBot teams that are interested in entering the competition.
In brief:
- Teams consist of one adult and 3-5 students aged 13-18.
- Teams can enter between now and May 15th.
- Phase 1 of the competition (digital design) runs from now to May 28th.
- Phase 2 of the competition (construction) runs from June 21st to August 14th
Details of the challenge itself are here: http://www.moonbots.org/about-game
The official rules are more exhaustive: http://www.moonbots.org/rules
If you, or some you know, may be interested to take a team lead role or you know of some students of the appropriate age that would be interested, please contact SDSpace at info@sdspace.org as soon as possible.

SD Space members will be attending the X PRIZE Foundation Tweetup. Details on attending can be found at the official event website.
Please join us on the evening of Friday, April 30th, 2010 for the X PRIZE Foundation’s first ever TweetUp! For the first time, we are holding an open house to give us a chance to interact directly with our online fans and supporters.
The event will feature brief, Ignite-style presentations on the Foundation’s three ongoing prizes—the Archon Genomics X PRIZE, the Google Lunar X PRIZE, and the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE —as well as our on-going work developing new prizes in a variety of fields. Additionally, we’ll be joined by a very special guest; Anousheh Ansari, the first female private space explorer and a trustee of the X PRIZE Foundation, will join us for a reading and signing or her new memoir, My Dream of Stars, co-authored by Homer Hickham (Rocket Boys). At this event, Anousheh will discuss her new memoir and the pursuit of her goal to travel to space.
The event will take place at the X PRIZE Foundation’s headquarters in Playa Vista, CA from 6pm – 8pm on Friday, April 30th. Light appetizers and refreshments will be provided. Cameras, tweeting, and live-blogging of the event are, of course, welcomed. This event is open to any and all of our fans, but space will be limited; so be sure to register early to ensure admission to the event. Further details, including directions and parking instructions, will be provided to our confirmed guests. We look forward to seeing you soon!
