NASA astronaut and California native Dr. Tracy Caldwell will be honored at the San Diego Padres baseball game on July 20. Caldwell will throw out the first pitch as the Padres host the Florida Marlins on the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing. This year the Padres also celebrate 40 years as a Major League Baseball franchise. Fans will have the chance to meet Caldwell during an autograph session immediately following the first pitch.

On July 21,  Caldwell will talk about her life as an astronaut, answer audience questions and sign autographs at the San Diego Air & Space Museum from 9 a.m. to noon. This event is open to the public.

Caldwell was born in Arcadia, CA and received a B.S. in Chemistry from California State University at Fullerton and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Davis. Selected by NASA to become an astronaut in 1998, she served as a Mission Specialist during STS-118 in Aug. 2007 and is currently assigned to spend six months on the International Space Station (ISS) as a Flight Engineer and member of the Expedition 23 crew. Caldwell joins a team of astronauts who are returning to their home regions as part of NASA’s Hometown Heroes 2009 campaign to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ISS in orbit and the 40th anniversary of the first lunar landing.

Omega Envoy rover demonstrated at FMARS

FMARS hab imaged from Omega Envoy roverI love it when good projects come together. Google Lunar X Prize team Omega Envoy has been demonstrating their latest Moon rover prototype at the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station (FMARS), operated by the Mars Society.

The initial demonstration was to remotely control the rover from Omega Envoy Headquarters in Orlando, Fl., take images of the crew hab, and stream the coverage live from mission control as well as the video from the rover feed. This was just the first of many more demonstrations the team plans to complete before the expedition concludes at the end of July.

So if you’re following along on your NewSpace Bingo card, mark off the “private Moon mission”, “human Mars mission”, and “Earth analog” squares. Thanks for playing!

SDASM Preserves the Voices of History

The San Diego Air & Space Museum has joined with five other local museums on a oral history project to record the rich aerospace history of San Diego, the “Air Capital of the West.” Volunteers will interview and preserve the stories of the men and women who contributed to San Diego’s aerospace history.

Nearly 500 interviews have been completed by the six institutions. These interviews along with photographs and other memorabilia will be used to create a traveling exhibit to be displayed in local libraries, schools, airports, and universities. The interviews will also be available through SDASM’s new online library catalog AEROCat.

As part of this project, SDASM’s Library and Archives interviewed the former Director of the Kennedy Space Center, Lee Scherer. You can see a picture of Lee in front of the Apollo 9 capsule here.
