JPL Tweetup

Wed, Jan 21, 2009

5:00 pm to 7:30 pm

Location:
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
Pasadena, CA

(Unfortunately the signup list for this event is already closed, but SD Space members will attend and bring back stories, photos, and maybe video.)

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will host a Tweetup on Wed., Jan. 21 at JPL in Pasadena, Calif., from 5 to 7:30 p.m. PST.

What’s a Tweetup? A Tweetup is an informal “meet up” of people on Twitter. This Tweetup is an opportunity to meet and speak with the JPL staff, scientists, and engineers behind the tweets of @CassiniSaturn, @MarsPhoenix, @MarsRovers, @MarsScienceLab, @EarthVitalSigns, @PlanetQuest and more. Plus, we’ll meet and mingle with other space-exploration-minded tweeps.

If you’re interested in diving into Twitter, be sure to follow @sdspace and take a look at the amazing people we’re following as well.

Mars Movie Night: “Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster” (1964)

Fri, Jan 16, 2009

7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Location:
Gerry Williams’ Studio 106 (map)
2323 Broadway, San Diego, CA

GhidorahFrom Japan: A princess from a small Himalayan country becomes possessed by the spirit of a Martian (in the American version) and escapes a plane just as it explodes. As this happens a meteorite falls from the sky containing Ghidorah, the monster responsible for her planet’s destruction. At the same time, Godzilla and Rodan emerge from hibernation and not only attack Japan, but each other as well. Mothra, along with its twin priestesses, attempt to convince Godzilla and Rodan to stop their fighting each other and to team up to fight the new monster. At the same time, the princess is being hunted by a group of assassins who want to kill her so that her enemies can take over her homeland.

Showtime is at 7:00pm at Studio 106 — please RSVP as seating is limited. Popcorn is provided — you can bring drinks or snacks to share.

A New Year, A New Look

The SD Space site is undergoing some upgrades, so please let us know (at info@sdspace.org) if you see anything that seems out of place. Thanks!

Open Luna

Mars Society members might recognize some of the names on the Open Luna team. Considering their past accomplishments, I’m excited about the future of this project.

A stepped program of robotic missions that seek to return mankind to the lunar surface, and to do it in such a way that it is accessible to everyone. The Open Luna Foundation is open source and invites everyone (hardware providers, writers, wiki-editors, designers, etc.) to contribute and share what you want to do and what science you would like to see done on their wiki.

Following these purely robotic missions, a short series of manned missions will construct a small, approximately 6 person settlement based on a location scouted by the robotic missions. This settlement will be open for anyone’s use (private individuals to government agencies), provided they respect the ethical conduct and heritage policies.

An outstanding concept. We wish them the best of luck. (Found on Spacehack, of course.)

Get together with other SD Space members to work on space-related projects. Last month we reeled from all our holiday activities and took a little breather, but now we’re rested up and raring to go. This month we’ll finish up work on the display table for Spacefest and start design work for SD Science Festival Expo.

Space is limited, so please RSVP to events@sdspace.org if you’re interested.
